 Carter has been inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors' (ASME ASME - American Society of Mechanical Engineers ) Hall of Fame.

He was honored during the 35th annual presentation of the National Magazine Awards, held on May 3 at New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 City's Waldorf-Astoria. Gene Shalit, arts & entertaiment editor of NBC's "The Today Show," presented the award to Mr. Carter.

"Mr. Carter has spent the better part of his life editing, developing and enriching some of the most influential magazines in the country. He has changed not only the way Americans think of magazines, but the way we think of ourselves," said George E. Curry, newly elected ASME president and editor-in-chief of Emerge Magazine. "Moreover, he set standards of excellence that today's magazine editors continually strive to emulate."

He was named to the additional post of director of magazine development for Hearst in October 1979. Under his aegis, Country Living, Country Living Gardener, Country Living's Healthy Living, Mr. Food's Easy Cooking, Rebecca's Garden, Victoria and SmartMoney magazines were created.

In addition to his editorial and administrative responsibilities at Hearst, Mr. Carter contributed a monthly column on the magazine industry, "The Magazine Life," to Adweek for nine years. He also hosted the cable television program "Good Housekeeping's Better Way," which in 1984 received a Cable ACE nomination in the Outstanding Documentary Program category.

His longtime commitment to changing unacceptable social conditions throughout the world has also earned Mr. Carter political prominence. He served on a number of Presidential commissions on human need. In 1976 he was a member of the National Commission for the Observance of International Women's Year International Women's Year (IWY) was the name given to 1975 by the United Nations. Since that year March 8 has been celebrated as International Women's Day[1], and the United Nations Decade for Women, from 1976-1985, was also established. , appointed by President Ford and reappointed by President Carter.  Fisher Award for lifetime achievement in publishing in 1990. He was also the recipient of the University of Missouri Honor Award for Distinguished Service in Journalism in 1970. He was named "Publisher of the Year" by Brandeis University in 1977 and, in 1978, national "Headliner of the Year" by Women in Communications, Inc. In 1985, The National Woman's Political Caucus honored Mr. Carter as one of the ten "Good Guys" for his commitment to the goals of full equality for women. During his tenure at Good Housekeeping, the magazine won two National Magazine Awards, one in 1989 and another in 1993.

ASME created the Hall of Fame Award in 1996 to celebrate the career-long records of excellence, creativity and impact of a select group of highly influential magazine journalists. Members of ASME submitted nominations for this award, and the recipient was selected and voted on by the ASME board of directors. The 2000 inductee will join the esteemed group of editors named to the Hall of Fame in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999: Helen Gurley Brown Helen Gurley Brown (b. February 18, 1922 in Green Forest, Arkansas), is an author, publisher, and businesswoman. She was editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine for 32 years.

Brown's father died in an accident when she was young, and her sister was a polio victim.
