A flaw in the way that a cement gutter and two streets come together on the northeast corner of Jolette Avenue at the Blanch Place intersection causes a depression to trap smelly water and serve as a mosquito breeding ground in Granada Hills.

City workers have been working on the area's sewer system for the past few months and I wondered if they could fill the lowered cement area to prevent water from gathering there now that they're in the area?

Street maintenance workers sent to the location patched the asphalt depression April 30 as a result of your inquiry, said Richard Evans, the West Valley Street Maintenance superintendent.

Several corners near my home need to be made wheelchair accessible, particularly those that intersect San Fernando Mission Boulevard at Gothic Avenue, Hayvenhurst Avenue, Balboa Boulevard, Woodley Avenue and Ruffner Avenue in the North Hills and Granada Hills areas.

I feel unsafe having to maneuver my wheelchair scooter onto the street near moving traffic to get through these areas.

Can the city make the curbs wheelchair-accessible to make my route safer?

With the exception of each of the four corners at the San Fernando Mission Boulevard and Ruffner Avenue intersection, each of the other corners has two or more wheelchair-accessible curbs, said An Pham, a Bureau of Engineering civil engineer associate with the Department of Public Works.

Curbs at Gothic, Hayvenhurst and Ruffner are on the list of other locations to be improved during the 1997 fiscal year, Pham said.
