ASK A FIREFIGHTER.

Byline: - Valerie Kuklenski

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  City firefighters at Station 93 in Tarzana weren't tuned into the FX drama ``Rescue Me'' at 10 p.m. Wednesday, but they were familiar with the show and welcomed a reporter who wanted their feedback on it.

``Sometimes it's a little over the top,'' Scott Rucker said, noting he watches the series as time permits because he likes star Denis Denis, king of Portugal: see Diniz.  Leary's character, Tommy Gavin The neutrality of the style of writing in this article is questioned. ``It doesn't present firemen in the best light,'' Dave Perez said. ``If people think that of firefighters, we're in a lot of trouble.''

The five firefighters in the station kitchen said they can't identify with the characters' womanizing wom·an·ize

or their candid discussions about sex.

But, Rucker said, ``The chief (played by Jack McGee) is our engineer. He doesn't mince words - you know, a senior guy who has a lot of years and tells it like it is.''

Jeff Hagel said, ``I'd like to see it get a little more realistic.''

``It'd be a three-episode show, and then it'd get canceled,'' one of his Hollywood-savvy colleagues replied.

Rucker complained that ``all the calls they go on are fires,'' quite a different workday from his. But he conceded that even he wouldn't want to watch a show that focused on firefighters giving oxygen to a senior citizen with chest pains.

As they watched Wednesday's episode, they took mild offense at a sex scene involving lots of whipped cream - ``Isn't that how you are at home, Bob?'' one teased another - and noted that a character clobbered with a baseball bat had no blood under his head.

In one scene, the crew arrived at a smoky apartment fire and found a woman hanging out a top-floor window begging for help. Leary's Gavin character scrambled up the ladder, unharnessed, before the truck was stabilized and then caught the woman as she jumped toward him. That drew hoots hoots

 and protests at Station 93.

``You don't freelance like that - it's a coordinated, planned effort,'' one firefighter said. But as the Tarzana crew dismissed the stunt as ridiculously dangerous and against procedure, Tommy Gavin's New York New York, state, United States

They are anticipating ``Ladder 49'' (``Who isn't going to go see it?'') but their opinions vary on the best-known fire movie to date.

``I thought 'Backdraft' was a good movie,'' one said, as two others countered that it was ``cheesy cheesy (che´ze) caseous. .''

They acknowledged that their most difficult experiences on the job pale in comparison to those of the survivors of the terrorist attacks who are central to ``Rescue Me.''

``I thank God that (the attacks) didn't happen here,'' Perez said, ``because I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
