ASHOT IN THE DARK; Ritchie's Revolver misses the target REVOLVER ***** 15.Byline: by rick fulton IT'S a weak week for rentals but particular mention must go to Revolver. What is Guy Ritchie on? How can the man who brought us Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch fall so low? It's not that Revolver doesn't look good and it's not that the performances from Jason Statham, Ray Liotta and OutKast star Andre Benjamin aren't good. It's the story. It's totally and utterly pants. It's like a Dodo has put a revolver to Ritchie's head and told him to write the most confusing, unintelligible UNINTELLIGIBLE. That which cannot be understood. 2. When a law, a contract, or will, is unintelligible, it has no effect whatever. Vide Construction, and the authorities there referred to. bunch of gobbledygook gob·ble·dy·gook also gob·ble·de·gook n. "wisdom". Sorry, but if this is "wisdom", I'll ask the Teletubbies to teach me - I'll understand it more. Which is a shame because Ritchie sets the film up well. Hotshot gambler Jake Green (Statham) takes the rap for gangster Macha (Liotta) and spends seven years behind bars. Upon his release, Jake and his pals seek out Macha at his glitzy glitz Informal n. Ostentatious showiness; flashiness: "a garish barrage of show-biz glitz" Peter G. Davis. tr.v. casino and they humiliate him in public via a crude game of double-your-luck chance. Macha responds by ordering his best assassin, Sorter (Mark Strong), to kill Jake and his entourage. Miraculously, Jake survives the bloodbath thanks to the intervention of loan sharks Zach (Vincent Pastore) and Avi (Benjamin). They agree to act as Jake's bodyguards, and Jake finds himself at the centre of a brutal war between rival gang leader Lord John (Tom Wu) and Macha, who is about to pull off a huge drug deal with the elusive Sam Gold. Except nothing is quite what it seems... The second half of Revolver is a mess, involving long sequences of characters talking to each other, and sometimes themselves in voiceover, regurgitating the same cryptic lines. The twist about Zach and Avi is obvious from the beginning and the reason behind the film is impenetrable. Like me, many film fans will rent this and wish they hadn't.
