The wooden boxes were placed side by side at the CE Electric plant in Darlington, Co Durham - each carried the name of the deceased and the date of the funeral.

They had been stored at the Co-op Funeralcare undertakers' site in the town after the cremations between 1979 and 1990. Most of the deceased were in their 60s or 70s when they died and from the local area. An investigation is underway by the Co-op, police and Darlington council to find out how the remains came to be left at the sub station. A Co-op spokesman said: "This matter is, understandably, of great concern. It is still unclear as to how or why the cremated remains were removed from our premises, whether accidentally or deliberately, but this was clearly done without our permission."

A police spokesman said it was unlikely any criminal offence was committed, but admitted it would be "distressing" for relatives of the deceased. He added: "Inquiries are being made to find out how they came to be there."
