According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website, Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when of 1996 (HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996, Public Law 104-191) Also known as the "Kennedy-Kassebaum Act," this U.S. law protects employees' health insurance coverage when they change or lose their jobs (Title I) and provides standards for patient health, ). ASC X12N's Health Care Task Group carefully identified items in the current Implementation Guides that might hinder implementation of the X12N Implementation Guides, and recently approved resulting Addenda documentation. "These Addenda, recommended by leading health care and insurance experts in ASC X12, complements and simplifies the implementation process for users of the May 2000 Implementation Guides," said Gary Beatty, ASC X12 Insurance Subcommittee Chair. "And for those organizations who are enhancing their current implementations of or working to comply with HIPAA transaction standards via their requested one year extension - good through Oct. 16, 2003 - ASC X12N is providing the much needed guidance to expedite the adoption of the X12 transactions." The ASC X12N Addenda to the Implementation Guides are designed to be used in concert with the May 2000 Implementation Guides. The Addenda documents are actual additions to the original pages in the May (or 004010) Implementation Guides and notes the specific changes that were made to the May 2000 Implementation Guide pages. Each change is annotated with a note in red and a line pointing to the location of the change. The Implementation Table in each Addenda contains only those pages that reflect changes to the table.
