The Wright Amendment -- a federal law allowing for the operation of flights out of Dallas' Love Field Airport, but restricting those flights to short-haul destinations -- raised controversy in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since its inception in 1979. Of particular concern to small business travelers has been how the Wright Amendment affects their ability to travel when and where they need to at an affordable price.

"We greeted the news of the recent Wright Amendment compromise developed by Dallas Mayor Laura Miller Laura Miller (born 18 November, 1958) served as mayor of Dallas, Texas (U.S.) from 2002 through 2007. She did not run for re-election in the 2007 mayoral race. Education and Career  and Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief Michael J. Moncrief is the current mayor of Fort Worth, Texas. Moncrief was first elected to the Texas legislature in 1971 serving for two years. He later became a judge in Tarrant County and served as a state senator from the 12th district as a Democrat.  with great satisfaction and, in particular, a tremendous amount of optimism on behalf of our members," said Chet Gray, ASBTA vice president of sales and marketing. "Although much of the travel industry buzz around the compromise is centered on the benefits to corporate business travelers, we are focused on the fact that more affordable airfares and scheduling options, and a more cohesive cohesive,

Small business travelers have voiced their opinions on their air travel needs and preferences in a number of online surveys conducted by ASBTA. Not surprisingly, most small business travelers cite price and schedule as their chief concerns and/or and/or

limitations to meeting demanding travel requirements, particularly when time is one of their most important assets. Specifically, a majority of small business travelers consider frequency of air service between cities a top consideration when making travel choices.

The Wright Amendment agreement successfully addresses these concerns, both directly and indirectly, and has the potential to unite the D/FW D/FW Dallas Fort Worth  travel industry with its "win-win" solutions for all parties involved, namely Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and Love Field Airport, and their respective anchor airlines, American and Southwest. With past issues resolved, the compromise allows D/FW Airport and Love Field and their respective airlines to focus as a whole on addressing challenges that affect both travelers and the travel industry, including fuel costs and security, among others.

More directly, the compromise encourages increased competition among airlines and, consequently, lower fares. It also allows for a greater number of flights and destinations from Love Field Airport, while still maintaining Dallas-Fort Worth Airport as a strong regional airport -- a critical element to the health of the D/FW economy and an important issue to small business travelers.  basis, that approval would initiate the gradual implementation of a number of other changes that could further benefit small business travelers in the future.

"We're looking forward to seeing how this compromise develops in the near and distant future," said Gray. "At the moment, we are just very pleased that the parties involved have come to an agreement that will make business travel easier and more affordable for small business travelers."
