ASARCO BEGINS SOIL SAMPLING IN GLOBEVILLE

DENVER, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Asarco Inc., with oversight from the Colorado Department of Health (CDH), began soil sampling at residential properties in Globeville this week to determine concentrations of lead, cadmium, arsenic and zinc in soils.
The soil sampling is the first step in the cleanup program agreed to by Asarco and the state of Colorado and approved by the court in July 1993. The cleanup reflects extensive and careful study by CDH and is viewed by CDH and Asarco to be fully protective of human health and the environment.
Asarco's 89-acre plant has processed metals since it began operations in 1886. Today, the plant's primary operation is in small volume production of high purity metals.
Properties to be tested this fall include parks, day care centers, open lots, recreation centers and homes adjacent to the plant, located at 495 E. 51st Ave. "Our goal is to sample soils in approximately 140 yards this fall so cleanup can begin next spring," said Margaret Staub, Asarco's Globe site environmental manager. Sampling will continue until Dec. 1, 1993, weather permitting, and resume in the spring of 1994. Asarco estimates that close to 500 properties will be sampled. Cleanup is expected to be completed in 5 to 7 years.
Sampling is being conducted by an Asarco contractor with oversight from the state health department. The analysis will be conducted by an independent laboratory and reviewed by the health department. Property owners will receive a detailed summary of the results.
"Independent experts are analyzing the properties, looking at gardens, fences, trees and other areas that may require extra attention during the soil excavation phase of cleanup. A specific plan will be created for each property owner," said Staub.
Representatives of Asarco and the state health department are meeting with property owners prior to the sampling to obtain permission to enter the properties. Approval for access is required as part of the Consent Decree.
Asarco, headquartered in New York, is a leading producer of non-ferrous metals, principally copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold. Asarco also produces specialty chemicals, minerals and other industrial products and provides environmental services.
