Barstow: The Southwest Natural and Cultural Association and the California Desert Information Center will sponsor an educational program on the Mojave Desert from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the information center, 831 Barstow Road. Ridgecrest: Nearly two dozen film, television and music celebrities are scheduled to take part in team roping, barrel racing, team penning, cow chip bingo at the Western Celebrity Extravaganza at the Desert Empire Fairgrounds April 26-28. Information: (619) 375-8202.

The Festival of the Arts, or simply Festival is a three day arts festival in Grand Rapids held on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of June.
 May 10-19 at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds and other venues, with exhibits of paintings, sculpture, photography, dance, singing and writing. Information: (505) 842-9918.
