ASAP GETAWAYS : LAUGHLIN HOSTS ANNUAL HOT-AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL.

Laughlin, Nev., will celebrate its third annual RiverFlight, a hot-air balloon festival, Oct. 18-20 with balloon ascensions, tests of balloonists' skills, food, entertainment, and arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts. .

Ballooning begins at 7 a.m. daily at RiverFlight grounds, at the junction of Big Bend Big Bend

The following night, a mass balloon glow will be held on festival grounds; after the balloon glow, singer Smokey Robinson will perform a concert under the stars in the 5,000-seat festival amphitheater. On the festival's final day, the Green Chili Cook-off runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

San Luis is a popular resort.  Creek from downtown to the ocean, is scheduled Oct. 20, along with other sports-related activities. San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden : At eight venues throughout the city - and one in Oakland - musicians will perform at the San Francisco Jazz Festival Debuting in 1983, the San Francisco Jazz Festival is an annual three-week celebration of today's best music, with over 30 concerts. Produced by SFJAZZ, a non-profit organization dedicated to jazz and jazz education.  Oct. 23-Nov. 3 and on Nov. 15. Ticket prices range from $15 to $46. Event information: (800) 627-5277. The Cannery near Fisherman's Wharf will host its 19th annual Halloween Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 with music, arts and crafts, kids' games, a costume contest and trick-or-treating. Admission is free. The Cannery is at 2801 Leavenworth St. Information: (415) 771-3112.

Half Moon Bay: This coastal town, 25 miles south of San Francisco on Highway 1, celebrates its 26th annual Pumpkin Festival Oct. 19-20 along Main Street with a costume contest, pumpkin-carving contest, pie-eating contest, parade, haunted house and entertainment. Admission is free. Information: (415) 726-9652.

New Mexico: Albuquerque will host the 17th annual Pageant of Bands, an all-day music show featuring New Mexico marching bands, on Oct. 19. Events begin at 8 a.m. at Wilson Stadium, on Lomas Street east of Juan Tabo. Admission is $4 for adults, $2.50 for students and seniors. Information: (505) 898-3103.
