More than a dozen teams from around the world will compete Jan. 7-12 in the 1997 International Snow Sculpture Snow sculpture is a sculpture form comparable to sand sculpture or ice sculpture in that most of it is now practiced outdoors, and often in full view of spectators, thus giving it kinship to performance art in the eyes of some.  Championships in Breckenridge, Colo., making snow creatures and architecture out of 12-foot-tall, 20-ton blocks of ice.

Teams competing will represent the U.S., Russia, Italy, Poland, Wales Wales, Welsh Cymru, western peninsula and political division (principality) of Great Britain (1991 pop. 2,798,200), 8,016 sq mi (20,761 sq km), west of England; politically united with England since 1536. The capital is Cardiff. , Mexico, Singapore, Belize, China, Scandinavia, Morocco, Canada and Luxembourg. They will begin working on their creations after opening ceremonies Jan. 7. Judging will be Jan. 12; awards include a people's choice award, voted on by the thousands of spectators expected to visit during the six-day event. Solvang: The blues will resound through this Danish village northwest of Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  Jan. 17-19 when the second annual Blues Festival strikes up at the Solvang Royal Scandinavian Inn. Jan. 17 and 18 events will begin at 6 p.m. with a buffet dinner and concert; Sunday's concert will begin at 10 a.m. with a brunch. Festival passes cost $60 per person and include all three concerts and food events; hotel packages start at $275 per couple and include two nights' lodgings, plus festival admission.
