From noon to 2 p.m. every Tuesday this year, big-band tea dancing in one of the ship's salons will be offered free with paid admission.

 the old shootin', robbin' and stealin' days at the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow-Gauge Railroad stop on top of Bear Mountain, midway on a ride through the redwoods March 2-3 and March 9-10. Mendocino area: Mendocino will celebrate whales with its 14th annual festival March 2-3 and Fort Bragg Fort Bragg, U.S. army base, 11,136 acres (4,507 hectares), E N.C., N of Fayetteville; est. 1918. Originally an artillery post, it is now the principal U.S. army airborne-training center and the site of the Special Warfare School.  just a few miles north on Highway 1 will get into the act with its own whale festival March 16. Both weekends in both areas, charter boat whale-watching tours will be offered. The Point Cabrillo Lightstation will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and docents will lead whale-watching walks on the Mendocino Headlands at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. both Saturdays. The Skunk skunk, name for several related New World mammals of the weasel family, characterized by their conspicuous black and white markings and use of a strong, highly offensive odor for defense.  Train will run half- and full-day excursions from the Fort Bragg depot; other events include wine-tasting, music, seafood chowder chowder, stew of fish or shellfish with potatoes, onions, and pork (usually salt pork), thickened with crumbled hard bread. The name chowder seems to have originated from the French word chaudière  tasting, 5K and 10K runs and walks, and a classic car show. Information: (800) 726-2780.

Palm Springs area: A dozen Dixieland bands will perform in four venues in Cathedral City March 22-24. An all-event admission badge costs $35 if purchased before Feb. 24; it's $45 after that. Daily admission badges cost $15 March 22 and 24, $25 March 23. Information: (619) 321-5277.

Sonora: The town will host a Celtic Faire, with Irish, Scottish and Welsh games, entertainment, food and arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts.  March 15-17. Information: (800) 446-1333.

Solvang: This Danish village will stage a dessert showcase March 15-17, featuring a walking smorgasbord, the world's largest Danish pastry and entertainment. Information: (800) 468-6765.

Healdsburg: The annual Blossom Tour is set for March 23. Visitors can drive their own cars or board a bus for a group tour of the Alexander Valley to see spring flowers. Information: (707) 857-3707.

Maricopa: The town, in an area known for its oil production, will celebrate its third annual Gusher Days March 7-10 with a carnival (4 p.m. to midnight March 7 and 8, noon to midnight March 9 and 10) and parade at 10 p.m. March 9 through downtown Maricopa. Information: (805) 769-8049.

Catalina: The island community will hosts its third annual Country Dance Celebration March 22-23. A free street dance is planned on Sumner Avenue, adjacent to Avalon Bay, the afternoon of March 23. Both nights, a variety of country bands will play in the Casino Ballroom. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $7.50 for children age 6-12 March 22; $20 adults, $10 children March 23; $30 for adults, $15 for children both nights. Also featured will be a chili cookoff, barbecue and country-western dance lessons. Tickets and information: (310) 510-1520.

Arizona: La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, the country's largest outdoor winter rodeo, will run Wednesday through Feb. 25 at the Rodeo Grounds in Tucson. Admission ranges from $6.50 to $15. Information: (520) 741-2233. The 71st annual Tucson Rodeo Parade will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at South Sixth and Irvington streets.

Oregon: The annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is a regional repertory theatre in Ashland, Oregon, United States. The festival annually produces eleven plays on three stages during a season that lasts from February to October.  begins this weekend in Ashland and runs through Oct. 27.
