ASAE completes study on nondues revenue activities.

Although meetings and trade shows generate the largest revenues, the costs are significantly higher than the revenues generated, resulting in a net loss for associations. That is one finding from the ASAE Industry and Market Research Department's recently completed benchmarking publication on association nondues revenue activities. The study was conducted in response to members' need for more information in light of fiscal challenges brought on by September 11 and the sluggish economy. The two-volume publication, Generating and Managing Nondues Revenue in Associations: A Benchmarking Guide, provides statistics and includes case studies and advice from experts in the field. Key areas explored include costs, revenue, program management, membership value of offerings, influence of nondues activities on membership recruitment and retention, and more. Among the study's key findings:

* Investment income, meetings registrations, and meetings sponsorships are the most common nondues revenue activities for associations.

* With the exception of online educational programming, the majority of associations have not implemented online nondues activities such as virtual trade shows, online periodical subscriptions, and other online publications.

* The nondues revenue activities that rank the highest in participant satisfaction and influence on member retention are meetings, on-site education, and credentialing programs.
