experience these twin emotions of pain and pleasure now as we labor to complete a jigsaw puzzle, important to current and future generations of Angelenos - the legacy of a 70-mile Backbone Trail.

The trail corridor traverses the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area: see National Parks and Monuments (table).  from Will Rogers State Historic Park Will Rogers State Historic Park is the former estate of American humorist Will Rogers. It lies in the Santa Monica mountains in Los Angeles, in the Pacific Palisades area.  in Pacific Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  to Point Mugu in Ventura County. The backbone will be one of the longest continuous urban trails in America, but only when the final pieces of the puzzle fit together.

Why is completion of a missing six-mile link of the Backbone Trail so important? The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area constitutes a majestic natural wilderness in the heart of the West's largest city. Completion of the Backbone Trail protects a wildlife corridor without fences stretching east to west for 70 miles. This corridor provides forage and water for animals of all species, including golden eagles, hawks, deer, raccoons, bobcats and mountain lions.

Acquisition of the land within the six-mile missing link assures that no more fences, structures or other barriers will be built within the planned area. Unless the last link is acquired, development will obstruct animals' safe passage between the high mountain ridges of the 8,000-acre Zuma/Trancas Canyons to the 13,000 acres of the deep canyon streams and grasslands of Point Mugu State Park Point Mugu State Park is a large park located in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in Southern California. It is in the Western Santa Monica Mountains. The park can be accessed from the north in the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center and from the south . Private owners are ready to sell these segments - the remaining jigsaw pieces left in the puzzle.

Currently more than two million people annually use and enjoy the Santa Monica Mountains. The Backbone Trail will link these protected 60,000 acres of parks between the city of Los Angeles

and Ventura County, making the National Recreation Area a continuous and contiguous national park.

, students and researchers. It exposes people to our Chumash, Tongva and Spanish heritage. Regardless of our mega-city population, the trail leads the way to the most diverse displays of wildlife and Mediterranean native plants found anywhere in the United States.

These community benefits cannot be enjoyed unless the funds to acquire the ``last six-mile link'' can be found. Several million dollars are needed to purchase the final parcels and provide an endowment. Since public funds are scarce, trail completion depends on private support. For that reason, the nonprofit Mountains Conservancy Foundation organized the Backbone Trail Completion Campaign.

Passage of Proposition A entitles the Backbone Trail Completion Campaign to matching public funds, up to $2 million. This will increase incentives for private giving to complete the puzzle.
