ARTSCOOL FILM WILL BE FEATURED.

Byline: Carol Rock Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Friendship. Loyalty. Betrayal. Pretty standard high school fare and one that gave a handful of students inspiration to create a short film that will be featured Thursday during culmination ceremonies for ArtsCOOL at CalArts.

``It's Not How It Seems'' is the film from students in the video production classes of the project that linked the California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts

Community Arts Partnership The Community Arts Partnership (usually known as CAP) was established in 1990,and is the first program of its kind in the U.S. The program links the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) to community art centers and public schools throughout Los Angeles County as part of an  program with the district. Other disciplines explored during the 20-week sessions included plays, print-making, animation, drawing and Latin and African music and dance.

Performances by the students will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main gallery at CalArts and in galleries D300 and 301, which are immediately adjacent to the main gallery. They are open to the public and admission is free.

``We plan on continuing with the initial seven schools next year and we hope to expand the program, but that all depends on school funding,'' said Glenna Avila, director of CalArts' Community Partnership.

Avila said nearly 200 students were involved in the program that involved seven of the 55 Options high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. The ArtsCOOL program is an expansion of CAP's involvement with the district. Locally, CAP is involved with the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. ``Students learned in-depth knowledge of each particular art form and got to participate in the creation of many different types of art,'' said Avila. ``For example, Aliso High School in Encino worked with African dance and drumming. Their teachers also included lessons in history and geography and all sorts of African culture. Not only did they learn the dances and the music, they learned the names of the instruments from people from Ghana, who taught them about Ghanan events.''

Avila added that the students were selected to perform during one of CalArts' noon concerts and took quite a liking to the school.

``They were very excited about the atmosphere,'' she said. ``They were fascinated with the integration of the artists working with the teachers in our school. Students learned not only about themselves, but also about cooperation and collaboration.''
