With $3 million in donations in its pocket, the Civic Arts Plaza is set to begin attracting even bigger names and its 1 millionth patron later this week.

Last week the Alliance for the Arts reached its goal of $3 million in donations, said Patricia Moore, the group's executive director. Organizers can only raise ticket prices so high before a subsidy subsidy, financial assistance granted by a government or philanthropic foundation to a person or association for the purpose of promoting an enterprise considered beneficial to the public welfare.  is needed to bring in top-name performers and internationally acclaimed ac·claim

``This is a long dream come true,'' Moore said. ``The alliance kept its promise to the city.''

The Alliance collects money to support theater events at the Civic Arts Plaza, which helps the theater operate without the use of any tax money or city subsidy.

Performers like Itzhak Perlman Itzhak Perlman (born August 31, 1945) is an Israeli-American violinist, conductor, and pedagogue. He is one of the most distinguished violinists of the late 20th century. Biography  and the Moiseyev Dance Company would attract big crowds, but also would need a subsidy from the endowment to keep ticket prices low, said theater director Tom Mitze.

``We've got a whole list of people we'd like to bring in,'' Mitze said.

In addition to the $3 million in the bank, the Alliance has $11 million in promised donations, Moore said. By the end of 1998, the alliance hopes to collect an additional $4 million in pledges to bring its pledge total to $15 million, she said.

Pledges are usually collected during a five-year period, Moore said.

The $3 million should make future fund raising easier. Instead of telling contributors that their money will go to pay for mundane (jargon) mundane - Someone outside some group that is implicit from the context, such as the computer industry or science fiction fandom. The implication is that those in the group are special and those outside are just ordinary.  things like insurance or facility maintenance, the alliance can say that every dollar raised will go toward educational programs or top-notch fine-arts programming, Moore said.

``Our message is a little more exciting,'' she said. ``We wanted to make sure we could keep the lights on first.''

Alliance records show that 80 percent of all donations come from individuals rather than from corporate sponsors, Moore said. However, corporations contribute 45 percent of the actual dollar amount, she said.

Mitze expects that the Civic Arts Plaza will reach another milestone Thursday, when it welcomes its millionth visitor.

Through Sunday, the venue had hosted 997,007 people in its four years, Mitze said. Based on projections for the week, patron No. 1 million will pass through the doors for the 7:30 p.m. Thursday performance of ``Ain't Misbehavin','' he said.
