told Alliance for the Arts members Tuesday that the Civic Arts Plaza could be a regional center offering daring performances that challenge the people's perception of art.

``We need to bring in new, avant-garde programming while still keeping with the tried-and-true performers,'' Young said during an alliance breakfast meeting at the arts plaza.

Young said he plans to get more involved in the alliance after his retirement, which begins July 1.

Young said he and his wife became interested in the Civic Arts Plaza shortly after moving to the area six years ago.

``We saw this being built and wanted to be part of it,'' he said. ``It's quite a tribute to this community.''

Young's connection to the tournament and dedication to the arts will help draw people from the community, Moore said.

``I would say he's very significant as far as bringing attention to the importance of the arts and what art can do for the community,'' she said.

Moore said Young has shown commitment to the arts during his tenure as UCLA chancellor. The university consistently has offered performances that have drawn visitors from around Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , she said.

``UCLA was known as the arts center for Southern California,'' Moore said. ``(Young) has been intricately in·tri·cate
