ARTS GROUP HOLDS HOLIDAY POTLUCK WITH MUSIC, ART.

Byline: BETTIE RENCORET Senior columnist

LANCASTER - It was a showcase of diversified talent when the Antelope Valley Allied Arts Association held its Christmas potluck.

Displayed in the Cedar Centre main hall was a sampling of paintings in various genres, and members recited poetry and played music to make the evening truly festive.

``We're proud of the progress our organization has made in the past few years,'' said President John Evo LoRe. ``As we move into a brand new year, we are truly an allied arts group.''

Harking back to centuries-old yuletides were performances by attorney Leah Van Arsdale and her husband, Geoffrey Levitt. They played selections on two dulcimers, then Van Arsdale sang medieval songs to Levitt's dulcimer dulcimer (dŭl`sĭmər), stringed musical instrument. It is a wooden box with strings stretched over it that are struck with small mallets. The number of strings may vary. The dulcimer is related to the psaltery and modern zither.  accompaniment.

Other entertainment came from singer/guitarist Jessie Vaz, who writes much of his own material, and Connie Johnson Starr, who sang a Christmas song. Association newsletter editor Jason Alan Davis read the classic ``A Visit From St. Nicholas The original name for a poem by

Clement Clarke Moore erson>, popularly called titled The Night Before Christmans ltname>. It is a popular poem with the theme of

St. Nicholas erson> (Santa Claus) coming to bring gifts to children on Christmans eve.
,'' also known as ``The Night Before Christmas n. 1. The popular name for a poem by

.''

Program Chairwoman Michelle Navarete emulated Eartha Kitt on ``Santa Baby,'' while Walt Carrier, dressed as Santa Claus, handed out candy canes.

Paintings were auctioned to benefit the association.

``In order to grow, we have to embrace all forms of artistry,'' Lore said. ``Creativity comes in many forms, and we need to envelop en·vel·op

 all true talent.''

To carry that further, Robert Jones announced the formation of a new poetry cell, as an adjunct to association.

``We think there are enough people out there who would like a vehicle to showcase their writing talents,'' said Jones. ``Poetry is a personal and emotional expression of that talent and needs to have a voice. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome. Just sign up, and we'll take it from there.''

Menus for the week at the senior life nutrition sites in Lancaster and Palmdale have been announced. All meals include bread, margarine and coffee, tea or milk for a suggested donation of $2. Reservations of at least a day in advance are now required.
