Arts Centre An art center or arts centre is distinct from an art gallery or art museum. An arts centre is a functional community centre with a specific remit to encourage arts practice and to provide facilities such as theatre space, gallery space, venues for musical performance,  has a new chief executive.

Alastair Upton has started work as the building undergoes a pounds 10 million redevelopment.

Upton has joined the arts organisation following 10 years as director of the Charleston building in East Sussex East Sussex, county (1991 pop. 670,600), 693 sq mi (1,795 sq km), extreme SE England. It comprises seven administrative districts: Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings, Hove, Lewes, Rother, and Wealden. The county, the seat of which is Lewes, borders the English Channel. .

Charleston was once home to the Bloomsbury Group and is now one of Britain's most inspiring small museums.

Of particular interest, bearing in mind Bluecoat history, was the Charleston Regained project, funded by the Lottery, which helped preserve the house.

Charleston's education programme and themed tours have both won national awards recently and the Charleston Festival is an international event.

Upton said he was delighted to be joining the Bluecoat. "It is an arts centre with almost 100 years of history,.

"The current transformation, the largest development since the Bluecoat opened, will prepare for 2008 and beyond."

Bluecoat chairman Simon Ryder, added: "The board is tremendously excited about the prospects for the Bluecoat over the next few years.

"Alastair brings a fantastic track record from his leadership of Charleston, and we are confident his appointment will secure and expand Bluecoat's position within the local and regional cultural infrastructure." The current Bluecoat director Bryan Biggs, who once controlled the building's art gallery, will now move on as artistic director.

"I look forward to developing Bluecoat's gallery, performance and arts participation activities," he said.

"Alastair's arrival will boost our capacity to realise our ambitions for Liverpool's leading centre for the contemporary art."
