ARTS CENTER TO RAISE CURTAIN ON NIGHTS FOR POETRY, PIANIST.

Two firsts for Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Cultural Arts Center this weekend will be the Friday night readings by published poets and a young pianist's first concert hall performance Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. .

At 8 p.m. Friday, poetry will be read by local writers whose work appears in the current issue of VERVE, the locally based literary journal edited by Ron Reichick.

VERVE has been publishing verse and very short fiction for eight years, said the editor. A theme defines each issue, with ``Walking toward the Roar'' the current topic. ``Out of the Dark'' and ``Awakening'' will be themes for the next two issues.

Submissions of work come from all over, said Reichick, adding that writers' interpretation of the themes often ranged beyond the staff's expectations.

VERVE can be found in nonchain bookstores and in the public libraries of Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Admission to the Friday evening reading is $3, with no reservations required. The Cultural Arts Center is at 3050 Los Angeles Ave.

Fourteen-year-old Yasmine Gruen will play Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor with the Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors
 Symphony in its special summer concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cultural Center.

The Simi Valley teen-ager has studied piano for 10 years and her talent has been widely recognized. However, her Sunday appearance will be her first performance in a concert hall, said symphony conductor Philippe Fanjead, Yasmine's teacher for two years.

The young musician will be a 10th-grader at Royal High School this fall. She was accompanist for the Sinaloa Junior High School Chorus. Yasmine, who comes from a musical family, also plays organ and guitar.

Fanjead also will conduct the Santa Susana Symphony in Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, Hayden's Symphony 88 and four selections of Cesar Franck Noun 1. Cesar Franck - French composer and teacher who influenced a generation of composers (1822-1890)

Ticket prices for Sunday's concert are: adults, $15; students and seniors, $12; and children under 12, $8. For reservations, call 581-9940.
