ARTS CENTER GIVES SIMI QUALITY AT A DECENT PRICE.Byline: Alicia Doyle Daily News Staff Writer Tired of paying a small fortune on admission to try the latest thrill ride at the theme parks? Sick of fighting over a parking space for a day at the beach, or of hassling the crowds for a night at the movies? The Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. Cultural Arts Center is the place to find local, laid-back, affordable entertainment this summer. Poetry readings, gallery exhibits, plays and rock concerts are among the events planned at the center for upcoming months. ``It's a nice, relaxing atmosphere,'' said Fred Helsel, the center's assistant general manager. The center's programs offer families - especially children - the chance to absorb culture they may not normally find on a summer outing, Helsel noted. ``It instills a sense of culture appreciation in children that, as they grow, will hopefully blossom,'' he said. The center hosts performances almost every weekend, with the galleries open Sundays from noon until 5 p.m. and by appointment Tuesdays through Saturdays. Tickets for events generally range between $10 and $15, with discounts for seniors, students, children and groups. Admission to the gallery is free. Like the new Cultural Arts Center, the original construction brought together the leadership and support of the entire community. Construction of the center involved both the conversion of the building and restoration of its historical features. These features included the stained-glass windows - paid for by private donations from more than 30 people - which were authentically reproduced in the new renovation. In the mid-'70s, Simi Valley's General Plan called for such an arts center. When the city bought the Old Methodist Church in 1991, the building had greatly deteriorated. With funding in place, work began in 1994 to create a larger performing center and restore a building of historical importance to the community. In November, Broadway legend Rita Moreno celebrated the opening of the Cultural Arts Center by performing during a black-tie gala evening. The center has since been an affordable venue for entertainment, Helsel said. ``With cultural events, it gives the family a chance to spend quality time together,'' he said.
