ARTS, ACADEMICS TO BE PAIRED IN PILOT SCHOOL PROGRAMS.

Byline: Helen Gao Staff Writer

GLENDALE - To counter the trend of casting arts aside for academics' sake, the Arts & Culture Commission along with the school district will launch a series of pilot programs to enhance arts programming at local campuses.

With a $106,700 grant from the California Arts Council The California Arts Council is a state agency governed by an 11-member council appointed by the Governor and the state Legislature to advance the state through the arts and creativity, with an emphasis on children and under-served communities. , the commission and school district plan to train 32 local artists and teachers to integrate arts and academics in the classroom.

The two agencies also are working on a dance program for eighth-graders at Rosemont Middle School and a Literacy Through Animation program at John Muir Elementary School John Muir Elementary School is a co-educational public school that is located in West San Jose, California. McKee also sees arts as an alternative way of learning and a means of self-development.

Joyce Smith, coordinator of the pilot programs, said part of the grant will be used to hire an evaluator to determine if the the arts programs have an effect on student achievement.

If the results prove positive as hoped, Eve Rappoport, the city's community-services supervisor for arts and culture, said they can bolster This article is about the pillow called a bolster. For other meanings of the word "bolster", see bolster (disambiguation).

``The ultimate goal is to get arts education back into everyday school curriculum,'' she said.

The pilot programs are expected to have far-reaching effects - beyond their proposed one-year duration. Smith and others are working to create a directory of arts-education resources for schools that will be published online at the city Web site and in book form.

Local artists who participate in the training program will be listed in the directory so teachers can easily contact them in the future to give special lessons.

Regardless of the pilot programs' results, Smith believes that arts should be part of education.

``Arts should be taught for art's sake. There is a whole literacy around art itself,'' she said. ``If you look at the past, the way to understand society is through art.''
