ARTISTS INVITED STUDENTS PAINT ROTC MURAL.

PALMDALE - A bare wall on the outside of the ROTC building at Highland High School Highland High School or Highlands High School may refer to:

 is coming alive with color courtesy of five students from Birmingham High School Birmingham High School is a public coeducational high school in the neighborhood/district of Lake Balboa in the San Fernando Valley section of the city of Los Angeles, California. The school is a part of District One of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).  in Van Nuys.

The students were invited to Highland by Tolerance Club adviser Miguel Rios and club members to paint the mural in appreciation for the self-worth and discipline the Reserve Officer Training Corps teaches to students.

The mural, done entirely with spray paint, consists of the ROTC badge, an F-22 fighter and a bald eagle bald eagle

``I think it's cool doing artwork like this and not getting in trouble. I think that's better,'' said 16-year-old artist Ahmad Nasseri. Nasseri said he painted a mural in his backyard, but his mother complained about the smell of the paint.

The Birmingham youths are known as ``piece kids'' - artists who take their work seriously and don't want to be confused with taggers who spray paint graffiti on buildings, Rios said.

``Piece kids take their art seriously,'' Rios said. ``They are the ones with a lot of talent.''

Rios met one of the young artists when he was in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

 during the summer and was immediately impressed with his work. He spoke to Highland Principal Pat Iaccino about having the students paint the mural and was floored when Iaccino agreed to it.

``It's what I think we need to do more of,'' Iaccino said.

ROTC instructor Sgt. Robin Reed Robin Reed (October 20, 1899 - December 20, 1978) is considered among the greatest amateur wrestlers in the history of the sport. Throughout his career he never lost a wrestling match, official or unofficial, to anyone at any weight class.  is ecstatic about the mural.

``This is fantastic. Based on what the plans are and what showed up, this is just going to be more and more awesome,'' Reed said.

Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  Post 771 is interested in having them paint a design for Veteran's Day and the Highland High student government wants a mural of the school's mascot painted in the lunch area.
