ARTIST WINS ACCOLADES WITH HISTORIC ARTWORK.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Daily News Staff Writer

Artist Dawn Pierson Guild's love of historical houses comes through in her rendering of the Martin House in Littlerock, a 104-year-old structure considered a historic treasure.

In her color pencil and ink rendering of the 3,000-square-foot, two-story stone and redwood house, Guild said she strived to depict it as it might have looked at the turn of the century, leaving out a trumpet vine creeping across its walls.

``I didn't want to lose the architectural vision of the porch and the rocks and shingles shingles: see herpes zoster.

Guild's artwork, ``Martin House,'' was the grand prize winner this year in the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Guild said she works from photographs she takes of her subjects. She has drawn the Jacobs Mercantile Building in Mojave, which was featured in 1997's hospital calendar, the original Palmdale schoolhouse in McAdam Park, and the old Western Hotel in Lancaster.

``I love historical houses. I just always loved old Victorian houses Overview

,'' Guild said.

Drawing in colored pencil and ink is a ``tedious medium,'' Guild said. The Martin House picture took her more than 300 hours to complete.

Guild, who has garnered awards at art shows, gives private art lessons to adults and children in her home.

Guild and her husband, Bill, have lived in Littlerock for nearly four years. They moved to the Antelope Valley from Orange County after her husband, who is a Boeing engineer, transferred here.

Guild said she has been an artist all of her life but didn't get serious about it until about seven or eight years ago. She was born in Newport Beach Newport Beach, residential and resort city (1990 pop. 66,643), Orange co., S Calif., on Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1906. ``I've always had a pencil in my hand, from age 4,'' Guild said. ``My mother and grandmother were artists, too.''

The Martin House, located on 77th Street East just north of Pearblossom Highway, was once part of the 5,000 acres of orchards that stretched from Littlerock to Palmdale in the days when agriculture was the principal industry.

Parts of the home's history are a mystery. A plaque mounted in a 5-foot-tall stone monument erected in front of the home boasts that from the 1870s to 1900s it was a stop for the Butterfield-Havilah stagecoach stagecoach, heavy, closed vehicle on wheels, usually drawn by horses, formerly used to transport passengers and goods overland. Throughout the Middle Ages and until about the end of the 18th cent. . But the information on the plaque is suspect because there were no records of the stagecoach line coming into Littlerock.

The house may have been used as a headquarters for the orchard and a guesthouse guest·house

It is known that the house was once owned by Antelope Valley pioneer Amasa Martin and that it stayed in the Martin family for several years. Although the home has had a series of owners, it is still called the Martin House.
