ARTIST HOLDING SHOW AFTER 13-YEAR ABSENCE.Byline: Sherry Joe Crosby Daily News Staff Writer It's been 13 years since Larry Gandy's last art show at the Valencia Public Library and the octogenarian oc·to·ge·nar·i·an adj. Starting on Saturday, the 85-year-old former Fillmore resident will kick off a monthlong retrospective of his career, which spans 63 years and includes original sketches of set designs for ``The King and I'' and ``South Pacific,'' as well as his award-winning photography and artwork. ``I had painted some during this time,'' Gandy said, referring to his 13-year absence from the art scene. ``But now I have the time needed to provide a one-man show, which is quite a chore. I believe this one will prove to be the best yet.'' In 1984, he gave up painting to care for his wife, who died in 1987 after suffering heart problems. Gandy also has suffered health problems. Several years ago, he was diagnosed with macular degeneration macular degeneration, eye disorder causing loss of central vision. The affected area, the macula, lies at the back of the retina and is the part that produces the sharpest vision. and is considered legally blind but that has not stopped him from painting. ``You don't paint with your eyes; you paint with your brains and your eyes are your helpers,'' he said.
