An avid hiker, Lyman was reported missing Thursday after he failed to show up for an interview about a book of his published last year. Later that night, he missed a Sierra Club Sierra Club, national organization in the United States dedicated to the preservation and expansion of the world's parks, wildlife, and wilderness areas. Founded (1892) in California by a group led by the Scottish-American conservationist John Muir, the Sierra Club benefit. Two climbers spotted a body around 7 p.m. Friday in a steep ravine in an area Lyman planned to hike. His car was found parked nearby. Lyman appeared to have fallen up to 50 feet from a rocky section between Middle and Upper Cathedral Rocks in Yosemite Valley, park spokeswoman Nikyra Calcagno said. The terrain in the gully was a combination of snow and icy rock, which are believed to have contributed to Lyman's fall. A ranger reported hearing a cry for help Thursday morning, but was unable to find anyone, she said. Park rangers again searched the Cathedral Rocks area around 11 that night after finding his vehicle. About 70 rangers continued the search Friday. A technical climbing team and a helicopter were involved in an all-day effort to recover the body from the treacherous gully. The body was positively identified as Lyman's. |
