ARTHUR ASHE TO SERVE AS HONORARY CHAIRMAN OF THE
 1992 NATIONSBANK RICHMOND TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
RICHMOND, Va., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Richmond tennis legend Arthur Ashe has agreed to serve as honorary chairman of the 1992 NationsBank Richmond Tennis Championships.
Randolph W. (Randy) McElroy, president of NationsBank Virginia, made the announcement today.
To promote the Championships, Ashe has scheduled appearances in Richmond on Wednesday, May 6. Beginning at 3:15 p.m., Ashe will be at the Sam Woods Memorial Tennis Courts in Byrd Park to conduct two NationsBank tennis clinics for youngsters from low-income areas of Richmond. About 300 youths aged 7-18 will participate in the clinics which begin at 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. In case of rain, the clinics will be held at St. Christopher's School.
Media representatives are invited to the clinics to observe and take still or moving pictures. The participating youths -- chosen in cooperation with the Richmond public schools -- will be available for interviews. However, Ashe will not answer media inquiries while at Byrd Park.
Earlier on Wednesday, Ashe will hold a news conference at the Richmond Marriott Hotel, beginning at 11:15 a.m. At noon, he will address the Greater Richmond Sports Backers at their initial scholarship awards luncheon, also at the hotel.
"Tennis Everyone" is the theme of the NationsBank Richmond Tennis Championships sponsored in cooperation with the Richmond Tennis Patrons Association (RTPA). The tournament begins May 8 and lasts through June 7. Competition includes Men's and Women's Singles, a Novice Tournament, a Junior Open, Futures Championships and Family Championships.
Applications are at all NationsBank offices in Richmond. Only the Novice Tournament is free, but NationsBank scholarships are available for all other competition.
In conjunction with the Championships, the Richmond Tennis Patrons Association and NationsBank are promoting a drive to collect old tennis rackets. After these rackets are restrung and reconditioned, they will be provided to any youngster who doesn't have a racket but who wishes to participate in the Championships. There is a racket drop box in each Richmond NationsBank office.
Also while in Richmond, Ashe will present a U.S. Tennis Association Camp Scholarship to Ryan Kittrell, a student at St. Patrick's School. The only USTA scholarship recipient in Virginia, Kittrell was nominated for the scholarship by the Richmond Tennis Patrons Association.
This is the first year NationsBank has participated in the Championships with the RTPA. Proceeds from the tournament fund the RTPA's community service programs.
