A combination of technical, geography, weather and polarization issues were causing communication outages putting U.S. soldiers at risk in Southwest Asia. Working closely with DISA and CENTCOM CENTCOM US Central Command CENTCOM Coalition Central Command , ARTEL evaluated the multiple problems and developed an innovative solution that provided enhanced quality services at lower costs to the war fighter while ensuring around the clock communications capabilities at the time of war. In 2001, ARTEL was among three prime contractors awarded the DISN DISN Defense Information Systems Network DISN Disney Channel (TV network) DISN Defense Information Switched Network (less common) DISN Defense Information Support Network DSTS-G program charged with the duty to provide critical communications and operational support to American war fighters. DSTS-G provides a contractual vehicle for the Defense Department, federal agencies, and other users authorized by DoD, to obtain global fixed satellite service (FSS) bandwidth and related satellite-based services and applications as part of the Net-Centric Global Information Grid The globally interconnected, end-to-end set of information capabilities, associated processes and personnel for collecting,processing, storing, disseminating and managing information on demand to warfighters, policy makers, and support personnel. (GIG) program. This most recent award from AFCEA follows other industry recognitions bestowed on ARTEL and DISA for their joint work. In 2001, ARTEL and DISA were also recognized by the E-Gov Institute for their collaborative effort on the Defense Department Joint Technical Architecture (JTA), which mandates the management, development, and acquisition of new or improved systems throughout DOD to ensure seamless interoperability.
