ART-SMART STUDENTS KIDS MAKE STATE PTA COMPETITION.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Three pupils from Helmers Elementary School elementary school: see school.  were among seven local children moving on to the state competition in the PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  Reflections art program.

The program's theme, ``A Different Kind of Hero,'' was played out in music with an original composition by Helmers second-grader Alex Mansour, who wrote ``Farewell Ray Charles'' in honor of the inspirational musician. Another musical tribute was ``Whales and Sails,'' created by Samantha Beaty, a fourth-grader at Meadows Elementary interested in saving the whales.

Aubrey Gierard, a sixth-grader at Helmers, was recognized for his photo of ``Super Buddy - My Dog,'' in which his dog lifts up his mother's minivan to save the family cat. ``My dog Buddy makes me laugh. He is a different kind of hero,'' he wrote.

``Pat Tillman followed his own path in life. From football to the Army, he was one of a kind,'' Sand wrote.

In the literature category, there were two state finalists. Jared DuBay-Jurado, a second-grader from Stevenson Ranch Elementary, who wrote ``A Different Kind of Hero: Chico Mendes,'' about activist Chico Mendes' efforts to save the rain forest and Molly Noona, a third-grader at Live Oak Elementary in Castaic, wrote ``Sophie the Hero,'' a fictional story about an 8-year-old girl who saves the life of a friend while on a camping trip with her family.

The National PTA Reflections program is designed to encourage students to participate in the arts. The winners at state level have already achieved recognition at their school and on the district level.

``I'm always excited to hear about our students being successful in all areas of their lives,'' said Helmers Principal Bernardette Torhan. ``The arts are so important. I'm so proud of them.''
