ART NOTES.Byline: The Register-Guard Exhibit features art made from recycled materials An exhibition of recycled art opens Saturday and continues through Nov. 4 at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University in Salem. Organized by museum director John Olbrantz, the exhibition will feature the work of contemporary artists from Oregon, Washington and Montana who fashion artwork from recycled materials. The exhibition will feature 72 works in a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, jewelry, furniture, textiles and glass. Thirty-six artists will be featured, including Ross Palmer Beecher, who creates traditional quilts from recycled aluminum cans; Gloria Crouse, who makes fanciful clothing from plastic six-pack rings and rip-stop; Ron Ho, who makes jewelry from found objects; David Gilhooly, who creates miniature tableaus from recycled plastic action figures and old puzzles; Katherine Holzknecht, who makes furniture and lamps from old skis; and Mark Smith, who stuffs vinyl forms with recycled clothing. The Hallie Ford Museum is at 700 State St. in downtown Salem. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors and students. Hallie Ford Museum hires a new curator Jonathan Bucci has been hired as the new collection curator at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University. Bucci has been the assistant director and collection curator for the past seven years at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center in Washington, D.C. He will start his new position Oct. 2. Bucci will oversee the university's permanent art collection, assist with organization and implementation of temporary exhibitions and help develop strategies to make the permanent collection more accessible to faculty, students, scholars and others. Oregon Crafted plans a second guide booklet Oregon Crafted, a nonprofit organization promoting economic development through cultural tourism, is looking for new artists to be included in the second edition of the Oregon Crafted Guidebook. The guidebook contains information and photos about artists and galleries with maps to their studios. It is designed to bring visitors to the artists' studios, where they can meet the artists, experience the creative environment and learn about the artistic process. Member studios are open the first weekend of each month and by appointment. The guidebook currently includes artists in Benton, Lane, Linn and Lincoln counties. The application deadline to be included in the guidebook is Oct. 1. The show runs through Sept. 25. The artists are Don Burgess, Helena Douglas, Jo Dunnick, Carol Fourtner, Marcia Hallquist, Ellen Sample and Joule. |
