ART NOTES.Byline: The Register-Guard Coos Art Museum juried show opens Friday Expressions West, Coos Art Museum's annual painting competition for contemporary painters from throughout the 13 western states, opens with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Friday and runs through July 13. The show contains 71 works by 38 artists chosen from among more than 500 works submitted. Juror for the exhibition was San Francisco artist Ed Musante, who will talk at 10 a.m. Saturday and conduct a gallery tour. Oregon artists in the show include Scott Berger, Bend; Joy Descoteaux, Eugene; Annie Eskelin, LaGrande; Alexandra Eyer, Gold Beach; Jodie Garrison Raborn, Salem; Priscilla Hanson; Bobbie Jansen, Albany; Joellyn Loehr, Sisters; and Robert Schlegel, Banks. Admission to the museum, at 235 Anderson Ave., Coos Bay, is $5, $2 for students and seniors. Charity Empty Bowls auction is online FOOD for Lane County's Empty Bowls Project is offering hand-crafted bowls in an online auction through Tuesday. The bowls are on display at the Northwest Community Credit Union booth at Valley River Center. Place bids at www.foodforlanecounty.org, which has photographs and details of each bowl. All proceeds benefit FOOD for Lane County, which organizes the annual auction to remind the community about its hungry citizens and the need to help fill their empty bowls. Mel Katz sculptures at Hallie Ford Museum A small exhibition of abstract sculptures by Portland sculptor and teacher Mel Katz opens Saturday and continues through July 29 in the Study Gallery of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University in Salem. Born in Brooklyn in 1932, Katz was educated in New York art schools in the 1950s. He moved to Portland in 1964 to teach at the Portland Art Museum School and later at Portland State University, where he taught for 32 years. Originally trained as a painter, Katz has made sculptures since the early 1970s. The museum is at 700 State St. in Salem. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for seniors and students. Children younger than 12 are admitted free. Admission on Tuesdays is free. Scroll paintings at White Lotus Gallery Nineteenth and 20th century scroll paintings from China and Japan are on display at White Lotus Gallery, 767 Willamette St., through June 20. The subject matter ranges from calligraphy and fan painting to portraiture and landscapes. Some of the scrolls bear the names of internationally recognized artists while others are by obscure literati artists. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
