"The North Umpqua River The North Umpqua River is a tributary of the Umpqua River, approximately 100 mi (161 km) long, in southwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains a scenic and rugged area of the Cascade Range southwest of Eugene, flowing through steep canyons and surrounded by large : a Swift Odyssey," an exhibit of work by Susan Comerford, opens Tuesday and continues through June at the Alder Gallery in downtown Coburg.

An opening reception will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 6.

Emerald Art Center

hosts juried show

The Emerald Art Center, 500 Main St., Springfield, presents its National Juried Spring Exhibition opening Tuesday and continuing through May 27. A reception will be held at 5 p.m. May 6.

The show was judged by Scott Shields, curator of the Crocker Museum in Sacramento.

He will talk about his criteria for judging a painting competition on at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the center, Admission is $5.

Art symposium at UO

includes an auction

The University of Oregon Art History Association will hold its third annual Art History Symposium this Friday and Saturday.

"Rebels and Renegades" will be held in conjunction with the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is an art museum located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. The original building was designed by Ellis F. Lawrence as part of his "main university quadrangle," now known as the Memorial Quadrangle. . It includes an exhibition and a keynote speech by internationally renowned artist Masami Teraoka.

Teraoka will speak at 7 p.m. Friday in Columbia Hall, Room 150. Teraoka is a renegade artist whose works emulate traditional Japanese woodblock wood·block

The prints selected for the Focus Gallery at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art include work from the series ``31 Flavors Invading Japan,'' ``McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan'' and the ``AIDS Series.''

At 8 p.m. Friday a silent auction of artwork donated by artists from the Eugene community and the University of Oregon will be held in the Willamette Atrium. All proceeds from the event will go to fund the Art History Association's annual symposium.

On Saturday the symposium will hold two concurrent sessions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. One session will convene in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art lecture hall and the other in Lillis Hall, Room 282. Papers will be presented by students from the University of Oregon and elsewhere.

Mother and daughter show at Fenario Gallery

Art work by mother and daughter Emily Chaison and Dhira Lawrence is on exhibit at the Fenario Gallery, 507 Willamette St., through May 31.

The exhibit will include a cooperative work titled ``Venus in Cancer'' during Mother's Day week from May 7 through May 15.

"In a unique mother-daughter collaboration of spiritual energy styles, we simultaneously paint overlapping each other's work," Chaison said.

Small format show this weekend in Florence

"Looking at the Small Picture," a two-day art show of small format works by 40 artists, will be held Saturday and Sunday in Florence.

The show features paintings, collages, photography and other works that are all less than 12 inches in size.

It will be held in Room 2 of the Florence Events Center from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. The center is at 715 Quince quince, shrub or small tree of the Asian genera Chaenomeles and Cydonia of the family Rosaceae (rose family). The common quince (Cydonia oblonga  St., Florence.
