ART INSTITUTES INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS TAKE TO THE AIR TO SPEED UP INTERBUILDING LAN COMMUNICATIONS

LANCASTER, Pa., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Laser Communications, Inc. (LCI) has announced the installation of eight LACE (Laser Atmospheric Communications Equipment) Ethernet and T1/T2 LAN link systems in Art Institutes International schools located throughout the United States.
The wireless LACE Ethernet and T1/T2 systems use advanced infrared laser technology to transmit data and audio information between buildings at Art Institutes International schools in Denver, Atlanta, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Pittsburgh.
"LCI's LACE systems are a high-performance, cost-effective solution to transmit data and audio information between several of our buildings," said Scott Hodges, director of Technical Operations for Art Institutes International. "Several of our schools are divided into several buildings, between 500 feet and one-half mile apart. Because they are separated by public thoroughfares, we could not lay fiber-optic cable. Telephone lines were considered to be too expensive and could not accommodate our Ethernet traffic. We also considered microwave systems, but found them to be cost-prohibitive, as well as too complicated due to licensing and installation hassles."
The LACE systems have paid for themselves within one year due to savings in engineering, installation, equipment and operating costs. Art Institutes International has not experienced any down time despite hostile weather conditions in some locations. "There were no data transmission errors through the blizzards that hit Denver and Pittsburgh in 1993. In fact, the system at the Ft. Lauderdale school survived 1992's Hurricane Andrew without requiring any readjustment," said Hodges.
The LACE systems simultaneously transmit and receive data through the air at distances up to 1 km. The line-of-sight systems can be installed in less than one day, and once installed, require little maintenance. The systems are IEEE compliant, protocol transparent, and work with Novel NetWare. The systems are ideal for primary or backup interbuilding communications and are designed to accommodate any campus or urban environment. The laser LAN link systems are ideal for universities, medical facilities, governments, financial institutions and organizations that require fast, reliable data transfer.
LCI is a worldwide leader in the application of laser communication technology and is celebrating its 10th year serving the market with a wide range of laser link systems and products. Located in Lancaster, LCI is a Safeguard Scientifics partner company.
Art Institutes International offers 2-4 year post-secondary art- related educations. Associate degrees are available in fields ranging from fashion merchandising to music video, and from commercial art to culinary studies. Schools are located in eight major U.S. cities with an enrollment of more than 13,000 students representing all 50 states and 80 foreign countries.
