collection of fine arts has found a fair harbor berth at the Ventura County Maritime Museum A maritime museum (sometimes nautical museum) is a museum specializing in the display of objects relating to ships and travel on seas and lakes. A naval museum focuses on navies and military use of the sea. .

Nautica '98 is an impressive display of 45 works by 28 Ventura County artists. The first juried art exhibit hosted by the museum through June 12 is focused solely on maritime art and is devoted exclusively to Ventura County artists.

The artists are primarily members of some 60 county galleries, societies, groups and associations.

``I didn't know what the interest level would be,'' said David Leach David Leach is the name of:

  • David Leach (potter)
, the museum's operations manager See datacenter manager. . ``The response was much better than we expected.''

One of the primary coordinators of the event, Leach said that the exhibit was a natural for the museum which already houses one of the finest maritime art collections on the West Coast.

``The exhibit grew out of a collective vision that the museum should be used as more of a gallery,'' Leach said. He explained that the sea-themed art show serves a double purpose, giving something of interest to art patrons as well as those more nautically inclined.

A handpicked trio of top Ventura County artists served as a panel of jurors for the event. Buenaventura Art Association members David Fay and Sally Miller Sally Miller can be one of the following:

teamed with artist and art instructor Carlisle Cooper to decide the prize-winning entries.

Anything and everything up to and including the tide line turned up for the judging. Realistic depictions of sailboats on calm seas, abstract renderings of fishermen and sea captains and drawings of turbulent tide waters were deposited for the judges' consideration. At an awards ceremony and reception Tuesday night, the jurors presented winners with cash prizes and ribbons.

First prize went to Sea Gate Gallery owner Margy Gates for her painting titled ``Interlude.''

``I'm always drawn to the sea. I'm like a turtle,'' Gates said, laughing. ``Interlude'' is one painting in a series that Gates is creating. The artist is in the process of documenting the Channel Islands Harbor from her coastline perspective.

``White Boats.'' The Oxnard resident said she paints what she likes, and what she sees. In this particular case, her taste paid off. The artist admitted, however, that she altered some of what she saw in order to keep her theme intact.

``My work is totally realistic, except I took liberties with color,'' said Weber, who repainted a red boat white to make it conform. The artist added, ``And I changed the mast a little to add to the composition.''

Four other artists received honorable mention for their contributions to the exhibit. Jacquelyn Cavish, Susan Storz, Connie Williams and Margery Spielman also were recognized for their work at the awards ceremony.

Newbury Park land lover Beverly Fiery said she has been interested in the beach and the sea since moving to the county 19 years ago. Her unique artwork is constructed from an assortment of papers she collects from seaside towns up and down the coast. ``Old Jack'' is the title of her contribution to Nautica '98. The drawing and paper patchwork collage is a rendering of a land-bound, retired sea captain looking out his window and across the sea he once sailed.

Pleased with the initial success of Nautica '98 and the variety of artwork included in the show, Leach and other exhibit organizers already are looking ahead to next year's event.

``The only change we'll make is the year,'' Leach said. ``We'll call it Nautica '99.''
