ART BEAT\CSUN's art bonanza.

Byline: Lori Moody

Children's book illustrations, woodcuts and wood sculpture are the focus of three exhibits starting Monday at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , Art Galleries.

"It's very upbeat, with elements of whimsy whim·sy also whim·sey

in all," said gallery director Louise Lewis.

One exhibit, "Shared Stories: Exploring Cultural Diversity," features original illustrations and manuscripts from children's books by authors and illustrators of African-American, Asian-American, Latino and American Indian descent. Artists include Carmen Lomas Garza Carmen Lomas Garza (b. 1948) is a Mexican American artist. Biography

("Family Pictures"), JoeSam ("The Invisible Hunters") and Leovigildo Martinez ("The Twenty-five Mixtec Cats").

In the second exhibit, more than 30 woodcuts by actor and artist Tige Andrews, an Encino resident, will be on display. The woodcuts depict the symbols used by post-Civil War hobos to share information with each other during their travels.

"I loved the idea of combining the two shows," Lewis said. "In 'Hobo Signs,' image and text are one and the same. In 'Shared Stories,' it is very definitely image and text in the very traditional sense of the word."

The third exhibit, "Furniture, Sculpture, Sticks" will look at tables, chairs and other works by Los Angeles furniture designer Robert Wilhite, a guest instructor this semester in CSUN's art department.

"It provides a nice counterpoint for what's in the other galleries," Lewis said.

The three exhibits will be on view through March 9. For information, call (818) 885-2226.
