ART AND SOUL; Teesside schools make their mark with awards.

SCHOOLS across the Tees Valley The Tees Valley is an area the North East of England. It can be described as "greater Teesside" and consists of the four unitary authorities created by the breakup of the County of Cleveland in 1996: Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland, and Stockton-On-Tees along with  have been nationally recognised for arts provision for their pupils.

A total of 21 secondary and primary schools have been awarded either the Artsmark Silver or Artsmark Gold by the Arts Council England Arts Council England was formed in 1994 when the Arts Council of Great Britain was divided into three separate bodies for England, Scotland and Wales. It is an Executive Agency of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.  in the latest round of national awards.

Artsmarks are awarded to schools which have made a strong commitment to the arts and which have developed a nationally recognised range of arts provision for their pupils.

Among those schools which have been awarded Artsmark Gold is Caldicotes Primary School, in Thorntree, Middlesbrough.

The school runs a range of themed weeks, has visits from artists and musicians and runs arts-based activities for pupils after school and during the school holidays.

Headteacher Leslie Howes believes the arts can be used to teach youngsters about other cultures.

Themes have included Japanese culture, a visit from an Aboriginal artist, Francis Firebrace, the five great religious faiths, and a visit from performance group the Lions of Zululand.

Mr Howes said: "This is recognition for all the hard work and effort that's gone into the development of arts in our school.

"The arts can open children's eyes to other cultures without visiting different countries and encourage them to learn about how people live in different parts of the world."

Ian Ramsey Ian Thomas Ramsey Ian Thomas Ramsey (31 January, 1915 - 6 October, 1972) was Professor of the Philosophy of Religion in the University of Oxford, and Bishop of Durham from 1966 until his death in 1972.  Church of England Church of England: see England, Church of.  School in Stockton has been awarded Artsmark Silver.

Headteacher Mike Davison Michael Norman Davison (born March 31, 1950) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1975 to 1981 and again from 1984 to 1985 as a member of the New Democratic Party. He was arrested on criminal charges in 2004.  said: "It is particularly pleasing as a school which is designated as a language college to gain the Artsmark Silver award, as it recognises our commitment to the arts.

"The work of drama, music and art across the school provides real opportunities for pupils to be creative."

Redcar and Cleveland The borough of Redcar & Cleveland is a unitary authority in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England consisting of Redcar, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Guisborough, and small towns such as Brotton, Skelton and Loftus. : Gillbrook College - Artsmark Silver; Laurence Jackson School - Artsmark Gold; Skelton Primary School - Artsmark Gold; St Bede's RC Primary School - Artsmark Gold.

Stockton: Ian Ramsey CE School - Artsmark Silver; The Links Primary School - Artsmark Silver; Westlands School - Artsmark Silver; Myton Park Primary School - Artsmark Gold; Oakdene Primary School - Artsmark Gold; William Cassidi CE Primary School - Artsmark Gold.

Darlington: Alderman Leach Primary School - Artsmark Gold; Gurney gurney /gur·ney/ (gur´ne) a wheeled cot used in hospitals.
