ART AND DEATH.

Byline: Bob Keefer The Register-Guard

It's fall: time once more to commemorate the past and to stick an irreverent thumb in Death's eye.

Eugene's Maude Kerns Maude Irvine Kerns (1879 – 1965) was an American artist. Kerns was born in 1879 in Portland, Oregon, where she was raised by her pioneer parents. After high school, she graduated from the University of Oregon, the California School of Fine Arts and later Columbia University,  Art Center is hosting its 16th annual Day of the Dead celebration beginning with a fiesta from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. There is also an art exhibit that runs through Nov. 6.

The Day of the Dead, or el D'a de los Muertos, is a festival in Mexico and other parts of Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies.  that both honors family ancestors and mocks Death itself. By tradition, the spirits of the dead are thought to return to Earth for the holiday, which combines elements of the Catholic All Souls and All Saints All´ Saints`

The opening night reception at Maude Kerns will offer performances by Ballet Folkl-rico Alma de Mxico and Ballet Folkl-rico Xochiquetzal.

The art exhibit, which is one of most popular shows all year at Maude Kerns, features 21 artists from five states. It was selected by jurors Miriam Jordan, an arts administrator; Hannah Goldrich, an artist and jeweler; and the center's exhibits designer, Dena Brown.

The show features photography, paintings, collage, prints, ceramics, glass and other artistic media.

Among the works in the exhibit is a mixed-media assemblage by Coburg artist Analee Fuentes, titled "Homage to Frida." It is a large puppet depicting the cult-famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo[1](July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter, who has achieved great international popularity. She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico as well as European influences that include .

" `La Muerte' and I know one another quite well," Fuentes says. "We are companions. She reminds me to pay attention, to make each day count. If Death is my escort to an afterlife, I can only hope that it exists somewhere in a place as beautiful as the Willamette Valley The Willamette Valley (pronounced [wɪˈlæ.mɪt], with the accent on the second syllable) is the region in northwest Oregon in the United States that surrounds the Willamette River as it proceeds northward from its , that Frida will still be painting, that Maude Kerns Art Center will still be having this show, and that someone, somewhere, is having a laugh on me."

In Springfield painter Anthony Dean Hensley's "Outlaws Celebration," a group of rowdy skeletons parties in a graveyard, oblivious to a skeleton sheriff coming down from above. The painting was done with Maude Kerns' festival in mind, and in the distance can be seen a depiction of the former church that became the art center.

Melissa Acedera took photographs at the 2008 D'a de los Muertos celebration at Hollywood Forever Cemetery Hollywood Forever Cemetery is located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles, California. Local artist Samuel Becerra, who comes from Mexico City, has contributed hand-built clay skulls, including a "Tzompantli," a wall of 49 differently shaped skulls reminiscent of the wall of skulls at the Templo Mayor in Mexico City.

Each year the exhibit includes commemorative traditional altars, on which are offered gifts to the dead - from photographs of the deceased to bottles of cola or beer.

This year's altars were created by Amigos AMIGOS Advanced Mobile Integration in General Operating Systems  Multicultural Services Center, Rocio Diaz, members of the Art Center's Duchess Committee, Hannah Goldrich and Carmelita Thompson, Seven Stars Preschool, and Jessica Zapata and the students of Crest Drive and Prairie Mountain schools.

Members of the Amigos Multicultural Services Center will speak at the center between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 about how D'a de los Muertos is observed in different parts of Latin America.
