ART AN AVENUE FOR EXPRESSION EX-BANKER'S WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS ON DISPLAY.

PALMDALE -- The work of Palmdale artist Laneea Tolley will be featured in an exhibit that opens today at the Palmdale Playhouse Art Gallery.

A retired bank executive, Tolley does watercolor paintings watercolor painting, in its wider sense, refers to all pigments mixed with water rather than with oil and also to the paintings produced by this process; it includes fresco and tempera as well as aquarelle, the process now commonly meant by the generic term.  that feature African-American themes.

``It gives me the freedom to express myself,'' Tolley, 47, said of her artwork.

The exhibit runs until Feb.18. A reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

 coordinator for the playhouse. ``Each piece takes the viewer to a magical place they might never have thought to go.''

The exhibit will feature portraits of children and animals, jazz-infused pieces and contemporary painting.

Tolley said she's been painting since she was 7, first inspired by classes offered during Sunday school Sunday school, institution for instruction in religion and morals, usually conducted in churches as part of the church organization but sometimes maintained by other religious or philanthropic bodies.

. Watercolor is her preferred medium.

``I'm sloppy. Watercolor dries the quickest. With oils and acrylics, they seem to get all over the place,'' Tolley said.

``I decided to leave the bank to pursue my art,'' said Tolley, who has lived in Palmdale since 1989.

Tolley was born in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and grew up in Pasadena.

Art gallery hours are from noonto 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Admission is free.
