ART/SNEAK PEEK : SCULPTURE GETS SHAKEN UP.

Earthquakes don't do a whole lot for freeways, but they sometimes can be an artist's best friend.

Chatsworth sculptor Cindy Medlynn has long been intrigued by the way earthquakes and other geologic forces can transform rocks and minerals into art materials Techniques and materials related to art:

Traditional techniques:
  • Acrylic paint
  • Charcoal
  • Clay
  • Collage
  • Drawing
  • Fresco
  • Glass
  • Gouache
  • Gum arabic
  • Lithography
  • Oil painting
  • Oil pastel
  • Paint
  • Painting
  • Pen and ink
. Heat, erosion and the passage of time are Medlynn's collaborators, providing her with weathered, textured stones that she combines with found objects to create what she calls ``multimedia sculptured landscapes.''

Ironically, Medlynn's new sculpture The New Sculpture refers to a movement in late-nineteenth century British sculpture.

After a protracted period of a stylized neoclassicism, sculpture in the last quarter of the century began to explore a greater degree of naturalism and wider range of subject matter.
series, ``Core Samples and Earth Works,'' was both delayed and partially inspired by the 1994 Northridge Earthquake The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6. . Three years after that cataclysm, the series is being shown publicly Tuesday through May 17 at the Artspace Gallery in Woodland Hills. Grounded in the ultimate form of down-to-earth realism, these pieces also are meant to express abstract qualities as they hang, like paintings, from the gallery walls.

Located at 21800 Oxnard Street, on the second floor of the Main Plaza adjacent to the Warner Center Marriott Hotel, the gallery is open noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. For information, call (818) 716-2786.

Certain human experiences are pretty universal, and we don't mean death and taxes. The serene contemplation of a body of water, the mental release that comes with a good, hot soak - those are the kind of mundane, easily ignored occurrences that link human consciousness across race, class, religion and culture.

They're also the kind of experiences that Lauri Chiodini deals with in ``Unity Through Diversity,'' her exhibition of mixed-media installation sculptures at the North Gallery of California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an . Chiodini supplements the show with video portrayals of several of her human subjects.

But you'll need to make haste to hasten.
