ART/SNEAK PEEK : QUAINT TOWN LOOKS BACK AT `1937 ART AND LIFE'.

Even people who've never set foot there may have a mental picture of Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc. . Located northeast of Ventura, about a 45-minute drive from the Valley, this quintessential California town has been used more than once as a Hollywood backdrop. It also plays host to an annual art exhibition that's been one of the state's most durable and historically revealing.

This year the Santa Paula Union Oil Museum is celebrating that exhibition's 60th anniversary with ``1937 Art and Life,'' which opened in September and will wrap up Jan. 4.

To mark its six decades in operation, the exhibition this year includes examples of works by some of the 22 Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  artists who participated in the inaugural 1937 show, such as Douglas Shively and Robert Clunie. Collectively, they function as a kind of time capsule, indicating not only of the tastes but the life and times of provincial, pre-war California.

The plans call for adding two floors of exhibition space on the building's third and fourth floors, which now have offices, and putting an 80-seat auditorium in the cellar.

This would be the second expansion at SoHo Guggenheim. After closing for three months last year, it reopened with a new entrance on Mercer Street, an expanded lobby area and newly outfitted galleries to accommodate multimedia works with special technical requirements. The Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, who designed the original renovation of the building, also designed the first expansion.

Of course, if you're as interested in a museum's outer skin as its inner contents, Frank Lloyd Wright's original Guggenheim overlooking Central Park still is worth a visit or two.
