ART/SNEAK PEEK : EFFECTS WIZARDS TURN TO FINE ART.

Art happens, sometimes even in the movie business.

Take, for instance, Burbank-based Available Light Ltd., one of Hollywood's elite digital special-effects companies. Millions have seen the firm's high-tech handiwork in pics such as ``Ghostbusters,'' ``Stargate,'' ``Ghost'' and ``Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.'' But perhaps you were distracted by popcorn vapors and the talkative genius seated two rows ahead of you.

Neither of those factors should be a problem at ``Innerworks,'' a group exhibition opening with a reception 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Available Light's headquarters, 1125 S. Flower St., Burbank. Featuring 3-D artwork, animation, digital work, drawings and paintings, the show is being curated by Patricia Woodlin, assistant professor of art at California State University, Los Angeles California State University, Los Angeles (also known as Cal State L.A., CSULA, or "'CSLA"') is a public university, part of the California State University system. .

Among those exhibiting will be Katherine Kean, co-founder of Available Light and winner of an Outstanding Achievement in Special Effects special effects, in motion pictures, cinematographic techniques that create illusions in the audience's minds as well as the illusions created using these techniques.  Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Regular exhibit hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. For information, call (818) 842-2109.

Talking in tongues

There's a double meaning to the title of the new exhibition at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History The Fowler Museum at UCLA or more commonly, The Fowler is a museum on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) which explores art and material culture primarily from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas, past and present. , ``Cuando Hablan Los Santos Los Santos could refer to:

The title of the show, which opens Sunday, literally means, ``When the Saints Speak.'' Within the time-honored traditions of woodcarving and worship, the carved saints of New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S).  are believed to communicate with supplicants, acting as intermediaries between heaven and earth.

But the title also refers to the creative ``voice'' of the santero, the carver who transforms blocks of wood into objects of beauty and devotion.

Featuring more than 85 brightly colored pieces, the exhibition traces the past and present of an art whose recognition seems to keep growing with time. On view through Sept. 7, the show is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday. Admission is $5 for adults; $1 for UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
