ART/SNEAK PEEK : BIOGRAPHY OF A VERSATILE ARTIST.

From fast-food outlets to postmodern multimedia installations, artist Russell Forester has shown remarkable versatility. He started out as an architect, designing Jack in the Box restaurants and other colorful emblems of corporate culture. Gradually, he turned full-time to painting and sculpture, grabbing Southern California's attention with a series of abstract ink drawings etched in shimmering shim·mer

In the late 1970s and early '80s, as his reputation grew beyond the La Jolla-San Diego area, Forester experimented with free-standing wooden columns and prisms, trimmed in light-emitting diodes. One critic, writing in 1983, described these constructions as ``architectonic ar·chi·tec·ton·ic   also ar·chi·tec·ton·i·cal

In counterpoint to the technological frenzy that surrounds us, Forester's works offer humor, a healthy skepticism and a penetrating sensitivity toward our troubled times.

Man of the times: For reasons that still baffle him, Julian Schnabel epitomized everything that many people disliked about the '80s art world. You know: that it was shallow, pretentious and overpriced o·ver·price

The mass media was all too happy to make Schnabel its bogeyman. The painter's talent for self-promotion helped feed its antipathy.

The '80s are long gone, but Schnabel is still very much around. A new exhibition of his ``Selected Paintings'' at L.A.'s Pace Wildenstein Gallery offers a chance to size Schnabel up for yourself.

The show is running through April 19. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free. The gallery is located at 9540 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills. For information, call (310) 205-5522.
