LEONA VALLEY - Sheriff's arson arson, at common law, the malicious and willful burning of the house of another. Originally, it was an offense against the security of habitation rather than against property rights.  detectives joined the investigation into a brush fire that blackened black·en

120 acres of hillside near Bouquet Canyon Road and threatened several homes.

Fire officials were told a suspicious green car had been reported in the area within five minutes of the fire's start, about 5 p.m. Sunday along Bouquet Canyon Road.

``It's just so historically dry that it doesn't take much,'' Battalion Chief Don DeYoung said Tuesday.

After their start at the roadside, the flames jumped the road and burned up a hillside, getting within feet of several ranch-style homes. The flames were burning near the homes when the first firefighters arrived.

``We went straight into structure protection,'' DeYoung said.

Firefighters later stopped the flames before they got to more homes along the other side of a ridge, along Lost Canyon Road at the southern edge of the community of Leona Valley.
