ARREST HAS NORTHRIDGE SCRAMBLING.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

The Cal State Northridge's women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  team was poised to rise above mediocrity but could now be bracing for a crash that could reach into the next century.

The immediate effects of coach Michael Abraham's arrest Wednesday have to do with the season starting in two weeks. But the long-term effects have to do with recruiting, current players staying with the program, assistant coaches with limited experience and public perception.

Already, 6-foot-5 recruit Myiesha Jones of Merritt College This article is about the community college in Oakland. For the private nursing school also located in Oakland, see Samuel Merritt College.

``I felt I was lied to,'' Jones said via telephone Wednesday night. ``I feel he was a whole different person than he said he was, and that this was a scam. I was shocked.''

Jones, who orally committed to CSUN in September, said it was a ``50-50 chance'' she would sign a letter of intent to attend CSUN during the early signing period in November after she learned of Abraham's indictment.

Abraham, 39, about to begin his fourth year with the Matadors, was indicted INDICTED, practice. The school placed Abraham on paid administrative leave.

CSUN assistant athletic director/internal affairs Judy Brame will take over the head coaching duties, but she stressed she was only the acting coach and not the interim coach.

Brame, a former basketball coach at CSUN with a 101-89 record, oversaw her first practice Wednesday. She is considered the No. 2 administrator in the school's athletic department. The Matadors began practice Oct. 18 and will open the season Nov. 14 against Oakland.

``The assistant coaches, in terms of the practices, they're ready to go and I feel fine about that,'' Brame said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Prior to practice, the players met with athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Paul Bubb and Brame, but they elected not to talk to the media afterward. Assistant coach Karon Howell said she was going to contact the players CSUN was recruiting and explain the situation.

Frozena Jerro holds the most college experience of any of the assistants. She's in her second year at CSUN and began coaching at the college level in 1993.

``I don't have anything to say at this point in time (about Abraham). I'm not going to say anything until the courts say what they have to say,'' Howell said. ``What I can say is it's exciting (to coach). It's an opportunity to do our best and show what Michael has taught us.''

Without question, Abraham breathed life into a dormant program. He was 23-59 in three seasons, but the Matadors went 14-14 last season. It was their first nonlosing season since 1988-89.

It was also his dynamic personality that enticed recruits to play for CSUN. On various occasions, players would stop by Abraham's office to chat, and many said the only reason they attended the school was because of Abraham.

``I'm concerned about the eventual well-being of this team,'' CSUN vice president of student affairs Student affairs staff are responsible for academic advising and support services delivery at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. The university supports the efforts of the players.''
