ARREST ENDS 5-YEAR MANHUNT MEXICO TURNS OVER MURDER SUSPECT.

Jose Marin, one of the San Fernando Valley's most-wanted fugitives, has been arrested on the U.S.-Mexico border, ending a five-year manhunt for the murder suspect, officials said Friday.

Officials from Mexico's Procuraduria General de Justicia do Estado arrested Marin on Wednesday in Mexicali, Mexico, and then turned him over to the Los Angeles Fugitive Task Force at the border, said Anthony Burke, the task force's supervisory inspector.

``On Tuesday at 3 in the afternoon, we broke the info, and by 8:30 the next morning, he was in custody,'' Burke said. ``It was just awesome to see agencies on this side of the border and the other sharing information and intelligence and working together.''

Marin, 28, is suspected of killing one man and wounding another with an AK-47 assault rifle after a five-mile chase through Sherman Oaks and Van Nuys. Police believe the dispute was over a woman.

The Fugitive Task Force was able to locate Marin after discovering that he had a girlfriend in El Centro, just across the border from Mexicali, Burke said.

Mexican authorities deported Marin because he is a U.S. citizen who was in their country illegally, officials said. Marin was being held on a parole violation pending an appearance Monday in Van Nuys Municipal Court.
