ARRAIGNMENT POSTPONED IN SHOOTING.Byline: Amy Raisin Darvish Staff Writer SANTA CLARITA - Arraignment arraignment n. the hearing in which a person charged with a crime is arraigned in his or her first appearance before a judge. This is the first appearance of a criminal defendant (unless continued from earlier time) in which all the preliminaries are taken care of. (See: arraign) of two men accused of spraying a Newhall home with bullets has been postponed for a week at the request of an attorney representing one of the defendants, authorities said. Shaun Tobin, 25, of Saugus and 18-year-old Christopher Mills of Canyon Country are scheduled to return to court April 1 for arraignment on multiple felony charges. The arraignment is the formal reading in court of criminal charges, and defendants usually enter a not guilty plea at that time as well. Tobin's attorney requested the extension Tuesday during his client's original arraignment hearing. Mills, who appeared Wednesday in Newhall Superior Court for his arraignment, consented to the postponement. Tobin and Mills, as well as two juveniles, were arrested in connection with an early morning attack last week on Green Mountain Drive, where at least 30 bullets from an assault rifle ripped into a family's home. The residents, who included two teens, were not hurt. Sheriff's detectives believe the attack was in retaliation for a dispute 10 days earlier between the defendants and one of the teenage residents. Tobin faces 11 charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an unregistered firearm and making criminal threats. Mills faces charges of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and assault with intent to commit great bodily injury. The two younger suspects, both 17, are being handled in juvenile court. Their names have not been released publicly. Amy Raisin Darvish, (661) 257-5254 amy.raisin(at)dailynews.com |
