College to hold financial event

LANCASTER -- Antelope Valley College's fifth annual Cash for College free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the college, 3041 W. Ave. K. Officials from AVC's financial aid office and representatives from lending institutions will talk about scholarships, grants and loans.

Human bones found near home

CANYON COUNTRY -- Human bones have been found behind a home in Canyon Country, the second such occurrence on the property since Thanksgiving, KABC KABC Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children  (Channel 7) reported.

"Me and my pup were up hiking around today and came across possibly an arm bone ... what it looked like, and some other smaller bones that were broken up," resident Joe Massimino said Monday.

On Thanksgiving night, Massimino's nieces and nephews found what appeared to be a skull, rib and back bones behind the home, according to according to

Massimino believes the new discovery is from the same body and hopes investigators from the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office can identify the person whom they belong to.

"Somebody's lost a loved one, somebody's missing that needs to be found," Massimino said.

The Coroner's Office has not determined whether both sets of bones belong to the same person, KABC reported.

Safe Kids Day set for Sunday

OAK PARK -- The American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  will sponsor Safe Kids Day on Sunday for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders to learn basic safety skills.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oak Park Recreation Center, 1000 N. Kanan Road. Training will be offered in basic first aid, rescue breathing, water, fire, sports and transportation safety.
