City sets monthly fee to fund 911 service VENTURA -- The Ventura City Council has voted to levy a $1.49 monthly fee on telephone users who live in the city to pay as much as $2.5 million of the $3.3 million it costs to run the city's 911 emergency call center. The new fee, which some disgruntled residents called an illegal tax, goes into effect May 1. Or, city officials said, phone users can opt to skip the monthly fee and pay $50 every time they dial 911 -- even though some, including one councilman who cast the lone vote against the measure, complained that would discourage people from reporting fires and other emergencies. -- Daily News |
