PALMDALE -- Tickets are on sale for the second annual Palmdale Jazz and Wine Festival on Sept. 13 from 3 to 10 p.m. at Marie Kerr Park's Palmdale Amphitheater, 2723 Rancho Vista Blvd.

The entertainment lineup includes jazz trumpeter Rick Braun, saxophonist and singer Mindi Abair Mindi Abair (born May 31, 1969) is an American smooth jazz saxophonist with a strong Top-40 pop music background. Reserved seating tickets are $50 in advance, $60 beginning Sept. 12. Festival seating tickets are $35 in advance and $45 beginning Sept. 12.

Centers hosting youth programs

PALMDALE -- The Palmdale Oasis Park Recreation Center and Hammack Activity Center will host youth programs from noon to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday through Aug. 29.

Activities include games, crafts, tournaments, and sports instruction, and equipment is available for children 17 and under. A parent or adult guardian must accompany children under 8. Children will sign themselves in and out.

Participants must obtain a free Facility Fun Pass at the parks and recreation office, 38260 10th St. E. or the Oasis Park center, 3850 E. Ave. S.

The Hammack center is at 815 E. Ave. Q-6. For more information, call parks and recreation at 661-267-5611.

College program for entrepreneurs

VALENCIA -- College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  is hosting a free Young Entrepreneurs Program for people age 14 to 27 from Saturday through Aug. 2.

The registration deadline is Friday.

The four-week course will be held at the Small Business Development Center. Classes will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays in Room 235 in Hasley Hall at the college's Valencia campus, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Rd.

City Council fills panel vacancies

SANTA CLARITA -- The Santa Clarita City Council on Tuesday appointed residents to fill vacancies on city commissions and panels.

Dee Dee Jacobson and Bill Kennedy Bill Kennedy can refer to:

 will serve as planning commissioners. Janell Cornell, Matt Halliday Matthew Halliday (born July 14, 1979 in Auckland) is a motor racing driver from New Zealand. Apart from one season in the Australian Porsche Carrera Cup, his career has involved various single seater series in New Zealand, Europe, and the United States.  and Duane Harte will serve as parks commissioners. Alan Ferdman, Spencer Leafdale and Geoff Williamson will serve on the audit panel.

Williamson and Cornell will serve two-year terms that expire on July 31, 2010. The rest of the appointees will serve four-year terms that expire on July 31, 2012.

Mom of 'Frasier' star has died

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  -- The mother of "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer has died at her home in Thousand Oaks, a publicist for the Emmy-winning actor said Wednesday. She was 80.

Sally Cranmer Grammer, a dancer and actress who performed under the name Sally Sullivan, was a four-time president of the Tarzana Women's Republican Club and held that title at the time of her death. She died on Monday.

"I was proud to be the son of Sally Grammer. I will miss her laughter," said the 53-year-old actor. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Sally Grammer is survived by her actor son and three grandchildren.

Flight instructor, student injured

MOORPARK -- A flight instructor and his student were injured Wednesday when the single-engine plane they were in had a mechanical problem and crash-landed on a hillside, authorities said.

The Cessna 172 went down shortly before 5 p.m. and landed upside down on the hillside just above a farm, Ventura County sheriff's Capt. Ron Nelson said.

The two men suffered cuts and bruises but were able to get out of the plane on their own, Nelson said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The instructor and student flew out of Santa Monica Airport Santa Monica Airport (IATA: SMO, ICAO: KSMO, FAA LID: SMO), also known as Santa Monica Municipal Airport, is a general aviation airport located in the heart of the residential community of Santa Monica, California, United States.  and intended to return there when the Cessna had some kind of mechanical problem, said Ian Gregor, a Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  spokesman.
