ARNOLD JUST 1 IN CROWD OF TINSELTOWN HOPEFULS.

Byline: Greg Hernandez Staff Writer

In Hollywood, the gubernatorial recall election isn't the only spirited political battle taking place this fall.

Ballots for the Screen Actors Guild national election were mailed to SAG members today, setting the stage for what promises to be a slugfest between leading presidential candidates Melissa Gilbert and Kent McCord Kent McCord (born September 26, 1942) is an American actor.

McCord was born Kent Franklin McWhirter in Los Angeles, California. Using the stage name Kent McCord, he first appeared on television in 1962 as a guest on The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet.

Pamm Fair, SAG's deputy national executive director, said Monday she isn't worried that California's Oct. 7 recall election will overshadow o·ver·shad·ow

``As long as Arnold (Schwarzenegger) isn't running for both, we should be fine,'' Fair said. ``Members should read their packet thoroughly, not wait until the last minute, and meet the deadline.''

The deadline for eligible SAG members to return their ballots is Sept. 23, with the votes being counted on that day.

Incumbent Gilbert and current SAG Treasurer McCord have repeatedly been on opposite sides on major issues over the past two years, including the proposed consolidation of SAG and the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists. Gilbert championed the narrowly defeated plan while McCord was one of its leading opponents.

Gilbert, best known for her role as Laura Ingalls on the long-running family drama ``Little House on the Prairie,'' defeated Valerie Harper Valerie Harper (born August 22, 1940 in Suffern, New York) is an Emmy Award-winning American actress, best known for her role as Rhoda Morgenstern-Gerard on the 1970s television show The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and its spinoff, Rhoda.  for the SAG presidency two years ago and again in a second election when errors were made in the voting process by Sequoia Voting Systems Sequoia Voting Systems is a company based in California, and one of the largest providers of electronic voting systems in the US. McCord, who played Officer Jim Reed on the 1970s police drama ``Adam-12,'' has been involved in the guild's leadership for several decades. Also running for SAG president is lesser-known candidate Gordon Drake, who was national strike coordinator for the SAG commercial actors strike three years ago.
